At 9:00 p.m. on November 29th, The Coterie will be holding a Poetry Slam in the East Lounge of the UCC. Come out and participate in any of 3 categories (Spoken Word, Classical, and Hip Hop), or watch Western’s own perform.

Ben McCabe, a 20 year old spoken word artist who represented London at the 2012 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word, will be performing. There will also be a first place prize awarded to one poet in each category. Admission is free, and there will be coffee, tea, and pastries for all to devour. Escape from the unbearable weight of your essays and enjoy an inspired night!

We had an amazing night filled with laughs and good music at our Annual Charity Coffeehouse event!

We were able to collect lots of food for donation to the London Food Bank, which was both humbling and gratifying.

The Coterie’s Annual Charity Coffeehouse is coming up soon!

On February 2, 2012, (7:00 PM is when it starts!) at the Spoke, we will be having a fun coffee-filled night of music, spoken word, and other performances. We’ll even have an open-mic for any of you brave enough to grace the stage with your presence.

On a more serious note, I just want to emphasize the importance of our charity event, because in doing so, we hope to pose a united stance on the need to help those who cannot help themselves. It’s cold outside (I’m sure we grumble about it), but I hope that we can take some time out of our busy lives to think about those who must face the harsh winters or feel hunger on a daily basis. This is our chance to give what we can.

All we ask is for one (or more!) non-perishable food item(s). All the proceeds we receive will go directly to the London Food Bank.

Come out for a great night that will be fun and surely to put us all on a high (a coffee high, that is!)

Help! How do I ask a professor for a reference letter?

Well, we’re here to help.

Here’s a quick link that will give you a good rundown:

And here are some of my personal tips:

1. I found it best to bring all your work (hopefully you did well!) to them, and also to type up something simple (a paragraph or more) about yourself, what you’ve done in university, why you want to apply to your program. Not only does it jog their memory of you (if you haven’t talked to them in a while), but it also allows them to see something concrete when writing your reference letter.

2. Make sure you ask if they would be comfortable writing you a STRONG reference letter. Better that you find out now and ask another professor, then to realize later that a professor wrote you a weak reference letter.

3. Don’t be nervous! =)

Stressed about assignments, essays, exams, work…(the list goes on….)? I know I am.

Come one, come all to the Coterie’s de-stressor event, where you’ll get to experience characters that will make you laugh and cry and crave cucumber sandwiches and muffins (you’ll know what I mean once you’ve read the play or come out on NOvember 29th!)

The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is one of Oscar Wilde’s most famous plays, and is filled with puns, double entendres, and crazy mix-ups! It’s a play you won’t want to miss!

When Maya Angelou came on November 3, 2011, to speak to the University of Western Ontario, she emphasized the impact of one person, no matter how unlikely, on another individual’s life.

If Maya Angelou was that person for you, if her story made an impact on you, please pass it on.

It is often easy to casually go about our daily lives and forget that our problems are not the sole problems in this world. Next time you see someone looking a little down or stressed, flash them a quick smile. You never know how much of a difference you can make.

I urge you to go everyday hoping that you can affect change.

And, if you are looking for further inspiration, Maya Angelou’s I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is an autobiographical story that will change the way you view difference in this world and see that change starts in a small way.

- Why in the world would an employer hire an Arts and Humanities graduate?

Note: Registration for this event opens on October 27 at 5:00 p.m.

Arts and Humanities students often feel like their undergraduate degree alone is not sufficient preparation for entry into the workforce, and rather than thinking about career options following graduation often think only of graduate school. While some career paths may require additional education, students who have completed a BA have a lot to offer an employer, and sometimes the challenge is simply in understanding the skills one can offer an employer and how to sell those skills. In this workshop we will explore the process of identifying transferable skills and begin to understand the relevance they have in the search for post-graduation employment.
